How Do They Work?
In contrast to bifocal glasses, where you consciously look through the top or bottom of the lens, bifocal implants provide both near and distant vision by utilizing a procedure called Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). Your brain quickly learns to adjust to this new function and acts together with the implant’s ability to optimize your focus. Intra-ocular lenses are also effective in treating astigmatism.
Bifocal Lenses Following LASIK
Laser eye surgery, or LASIK, is most commonly used to correct nearsightedness for those under the age of 40. However, a previous LASIK procedure can complicate a subsequent lens implant surgery for cataract, if it becomes necessary. Alabama Vision Center in Birmingham uses the ORA laser eye surgery procedure along with LASIK, which reduces or eliminates these complications, and is usually compatible with any intraocular lens implantation that may be required later in life.
A bifocal lens implant can provide those over 40 (even without cataracts) improved focus and vision both far and near without glasses. Having a bifocal lens implanted without a cataract is done precisely the same as if you did have one, with the natural lens being replaced by the implanted lenses.
Single Bifocal Lens
If one eye is free of cataracts, or already has a standard implanted lens, a bifocal lens can be implanted in the other eye. While the outcome is usually better with implants in both eyes, a single implant can still significantly improve your vision.
